Extra Credit-Due 10AM on 5/10- Boot Camps

This blog is optional and is worth 5 points.
Several years ago, the use of boot camps took the juvenile court by storm. They are short term, inexpensive, and generally described as a terrific sentencing option. Now that they have been in use for some time, evidence is now available about their success.

Read the information in the text about boot camps and answer the following question.
If you were a juvenile court judge, would you use boot camps as a sentencing option? Explain your answer, using information in the text to support your decision (include one quote from the text to support your decision).

I would use boot camps as a sentenceing opion, because it gives juveniles a chanceto change.
It also " combine the get tough elementof the the adult program with education, substance abuse, and socal skills training." This gives an "estimated savings of $1 million annually." Boot camp should be a bigger thing for the young people.

I would have to agree with the courts on the sentencing option of juveniles to boot camps. I think that it works, I know people and have friends who have been to boot camp and they have told me many stories about how they learned thier lesson ad that it was not fun at all. I think the get tough element of the adult program needs more inprovement in the process of what they are really trying to do for the juveniles. The text states that" [c]ombine the get tought element of the adult program with education, substance abuse, and social skills training".

I think that boot camps are good way of instilling positive behavior to a juvenile. It give them disipline that is not coming from someone in whom they can get over on. It shows them that they have to take responsibility for their actions. What I don't like is that boot camp has not always been a positive experience for juvenile because the instructor were torturing instead of teaching. It can be a very positive experience as long as the laws continue to be followed. This could work if we had skilled people to provide an positive influence on our juveniles. " Boot camp leaders are trained to act as mentors or role models to the juvenile offenders"

I support the use of boot camp ,it help enforce the dispiline in the juvinile because its not coming from someone they caan play with or not listening to . and the mere fact that the instructor at the camp dont play you just have to do whatever they say,so they are force to straigten up and even after leaving the boot camp they are still monitor for sometimeboot camp provide a positive influence on our juvenile.

If I were a Juvenile Court Judge I would use boot camps as a sentencing option. Boot Camps are very strict and they get their point across. I feel that sending a juvenile away to boot camp is a better punishment then probation. While on probation a child can still go about his or her own normal life, while hanging around with the same crowd of Juveniles. By making them stay home they may not learn their lesson. At boot camps they will learn to respect other people. The juvenile do not have to answer to their parents or a probation officer who they speak to maybe once a week, they will have to answer to a drill sergeant . The drill sergeants job is to make the child obey their orders. Juvenile’s who walk away after their experience at boot camps generally have learned to respect, honor, obey, along with many other positive quality’s of life. The “get tough” approach works. You can’t keep cradling these juveniles in your hands giving them chance after chance. Courts have to put their foot down and put them where they don’t want to go The drill sergeants don’t baby the juveniles. They are hard on them, never giving them the easy way out. With boot camps the juvenile’s can take their experience and appreciate life more. It gives them the opportunity to change , and reinvent themselves. Boot camps are also cheaper then most sentencing given to juveniles. As long as the leaders do not over do their jobs of being in charge the child should walk away with a positive change.

If I was a juvenile court judge, I woulld not use boot camps as a sentencing option, because the evidence shows that "juvenile boot camps fail to reduce future offending." In theory, successful boot camp programs should rehabilatate juvenile offenders, reduce the number of beds needed in secure institutional programs, and reduce the overall cost of care". Evaluations of these boot camps shows this to be untrue. The evidence shows the ineffectiveness is due to not providing treatment. " Boot camps can not save money unless the have hundreds of beds and the stay is limited to 3 months, boot camps often keep cost down by leaving aftercare to overload parole officers; and no documentation exist that boot camps decrease delinquency." So, what is the use? There may be some successes of juvenile boot camps, one not being the reduction of delinquency.Everything that sounds good isn't good. We have to not only look at theories, but focus on the evidence in order to reduce juvenile delinquency.

Studies show that using boot camps as a means of correcting delinquent behavior is not the most effective. The main reason it is believed that boot camps are not effective is the fact that they concentrate more on the physical training then on advanced therapy for the delinquents meta-analysis was taken that showed boot camps are an ineffective approach. Not only are they ineffective, but the delinquents in the boot camps showed higher recidivism rates. As a result, the number of boot camps in the U.S has dropped. “More than 75 state-run boot camps were in operation in more than 30 states across the country; today, 51 remain”. Due to the overwhelming evidence presented in the text, as a judge I would not choose boot camp as an alternative to traditional institutional sentences. However, I would use it couple with traditional treatment. Youths that attended boot camps showed positive attitudes to their environment, and Ronald Corbet and Joan Petersilia note, however that boot camp participants seen to be less antisocial upon returning to society. Therefore, they have some usefulness and I wouldn't completely deny the use. In conclusion, as a judge I would make boot camps the last resort and would implement therapy treatment afterwards for the juvenile.

If I was a judge I would use boot camps as a sentencing option. I believe juveniles can benefit from boot camps. This was even revealed in a national study comparing the enviroments of boot camps with more traditional secure correctional facilities for juveniles. They found out that boot camp youth report more positive attitudes to enviroment, and lover levels of depression. If it is a female offender it may not be a good option. Boot camps did little for females because female inmates are more likely to have children. There are no parenting skill programs. Females inmates are more likely to have history of physical or sexual abuse. There are no programs to help them cope with or avoid victimization. Even with some problems boot camps are good. They just need to improve the programs. Boot camps needs to benefit males and females. The chances of recidivism will reduce if the program last longer and they offered more intensive treatment.

A juvenile boot camps can be a great tool to prevent teens getting involved with crime and gangs. These camps are more productive alternative to prison, because they teach juvenile offenders discipline, respect, get them on the right path and teach them various skills that will be useful for them in future.. Here is a closer look into juvenile boot camp’s effectiveness. This page shows some of the benefits of juvenile boot camps.
