After reading chapter 5 answer the two questions from the viewpoint section that begins on page 166. Remember, this assignment is about information, not opinion.
From a developmental perspective the textbook states" a delinquent career must be undestood as a passage along which people travel, that it has a beginning and an end, and that events and life circumstances influence the journey". There are many factors that contribute to one's delinquent behavior. Structural factor such as income. Luis's life has been filled with displacement and poverty, socialization factor his family life has been unstable, his mother was a prostitute, his age of on set was 9 years old. Psychological factor exist such as attention problems in school. When Luis immigrated to the United States he became apart of a gang increasing his criminal opportunity. He than was incarcerated for manslaugter and sentenced to 9 years. During Luis's incarcenration he continue to stay connected to his family(the Latin Kings a gang)and formed an organization to keep the ties with the members on the streets.Luis's structural and interpersonal factors never changed. The developmental perspective links personal change to social change. A latent trait theorist will say that Luis escalating delinquent activities are caused by an attribute or characteristic that controls the inclination to commit delinquent acts.Characterists such as impulsive personality traits such as insertive, risk -taking and short sighted, low self-control such as poor parents and lack of supervision, and criminal opportunity such as gang involvement. If you possess one of these traits you are at-risk of becoming a criminal.Latent theorist suggest that the inclination to commit delinquency is stable, but the opportunity fluctuates over time.If there are opprtunities for one to commit a crime than one will take avantage of that opportunity. The perspectives differ in human development, whether it's a constant change or a more stable one. There is evidence that both latent trait and life course theories has its contributing factors to understaning the development of delinquency. There are some preexisting characteristics as well as social relationships and delinquent behavior.
1. From a developmental view Luis's behavior is affected by his socialization factors this deals with the relationship with his family and peers. His mother was a prostitute so he probably didn't have strong family values. He grew up in poverty. 2. According to the text "latent trait is either present at birth or established early in life and it remains stable over time. It includes defective intelligence, impulsive personality and that is what makes people delinquent.Luis shows some of the factors of the latent trait. Luis was nine when he was sent to jail for robbery then after that his behavior started to escalate. He dropped out of school, which shows he wasn't that intelligent.
1- As a developedmental view on luis's behvior he exibits ADD in school and he had a disfuncional home where his mother was a prositue were he was posibly introduced to drugs at an early age. which explaines why he was in and out of prison since he was 9 years old.
2- The laten trait theory tells us about defective intelligence and impulsive personality which makes juveniles prone to delinquency. He may have had a defective personality considering how his mother choose to live her life he was in trouble from the begining. Like luis's inability to focus or stay in school was a sign of his impulsive personality.
1. Luis's behavior patterns from a developmental perspective show that his offending was influenced by early social experiences. It also shows that his crimes didn't stop, they just escalated to more serious crimes. He lived his early years suffering through poverty in Havana, where his mother was a prostitute. He also had trouble in school and dropped out in the seventh grade. These are early social experiences that contributed to his delinquency. His crimes escalated from robbery at 9 years old to the murder of his girlfriend in 1981. While serving time for the murder he ordered the killing of disloyal members of the Latin Kings. This shows that his crimes weren't a "one shot deal". Instead of aging out, his crimes just got worse as he aged.
2. A latent trait theorist would explain that his delinquent acts escalated due to the fact that people do not change, only their criminal opportunities do. Being the leader of the Latin Kings brought more criminal opportunities which fueled his criminal lifestyle. They would also point to his lack of proper parenting as a cause to the escalation of his delinquent acts.
1. Luis's behavior patterns from a developmental perspective says that the reason Luis has lived his life as a career criminal is because the way he grew up. People who live a bad childhood usually grow up to be bad adults. Luis's family was around criminal activity which is why he lives the life a criminal. If he would have grew up in a different enviroment with loving parents who cared for him and his education then could have became a leader of a postive group and not a street gang.
2. If Luis's parents would have raised him diffenently then he could have became a different person. A latent trait theorist would say that Luis couldn't change his behavior if he tried. Once a murder always a murder. He could not change him but opporunity in his criminal life could change.
1.From a developmental perspective Luis has had all the key signs of a future deliquent.Luis is a product of a dysfuncional family life.He is the son of a prostitute. At the age of 9 luis was arrested for robbery. From what we've learned from the age of onset luis started his deliquent career early and as a result carried on into his adult life. Also Luis lived in a poor part of Havana where crime was a way to make money. As a resul,Luis also became a thief and a gang member.Luis also had anti-scoial tendencies in school and frequently recieved bad grades. Therefore his behavior patterns made him a deliquent from a developmental persepctive.
2.Luis showed he had defective intelligence and an impulsive personality from a younger age.Latent Trait Theorists would tag Luis in one of their studies rigth away. They would believe since he was born of a prostitute in a poor area in Havane that he was born to be a deliquent. Also he showed a defective intelligence by dropping out of school in the 7th grade.Trait Theorists say a deliquent only needs to have one the the traits to become a career criminal.Luis was a prime example of their theory because he would have shown more than one of the trait Theories.
1. According to the information in the text Luis's behavior patterns showed all the signs of a developmental perspective theory. Luis was the son of a prostitute in Haven, this is a example of life-course theory. The text books say when (some kids, however, are incapable of maturing in a reasonable and timely fashion because of family, enviromental, or personal problems)it also states that disruption in life's major transition can be destructive and ultimately can promote criminality. His life showed all the signs. He grew up in poverty had trouble in shcool and teachers described him having attention problems from a early age. 2. According to the latent trait view the propensity or inclination to commit delinquency is stable but the opportunity to commit delinquency fluctuates. These social scientist believe that this trait is either present at birth or establish early on. Luis had plenty of opportunity to commit crimes. You can see how his crimes got worst and whenever he had the opportunity to do a criminal act he did. If you carry one of the latent traits you are in danger of becoming a career criminal.
1. The main cause of this is that he was born into poverty, and people born into poverty don't have many opportunities. Also his mother was a prostitute. This is were all of his problems began. when he was nine years old he was sent to prison because of robbery this was his first taste of crime. And then while in school he had troubles so he dropped out in the seventh grade, the teachers said because he has attention problems. then when he turned nineteen in 1980 h ewent to the US and became a gang member of a group called the Latin Kings. Soon after in 1981 he killed his girlfriend and fled to Chicago but was apprehended in 1984 and sentenced to nine years and charged with second degree murder. While in prison he started his own chapter of the latin kings. He found of that some of the members were stealing from the gang and wanted his people on the outside to terminate them and authorities found out. They went to trial and he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit a murder.
2. A latent theorist would probably feel that the reason he choose to commit crimes is because he was born to a prostitue and into poverty. So since he was born into poverty he didn't have as many opportunities as people that may have money so he had to find means any way he could. Also since he was displaced he joined the gang so that he could have a since of belonging.
From a developmental perspective, Luis started his delincuency at a young age. Coming from Havana and living in poverty, his chances of crime was high.then having a dysfunctional family, the son of a prostitue puts him in the crime path. Sent to prison at a early age for robbery, trouble in school because of attention problems. he dropped out of school in seventh grade. this shows that his criminal career was gettin worse. As he got oldeer, his crimes got worse. He joined a gang, commited murder, imprisoned again and gave orders to kill. So from his early child life and constantly around crime caused him to stay in that life and get worse.
2. A latent trait theorist would say that he was either born with it or established it in early life. from living in poverty and the son of a prostitite, shows how it couldve started. how he acted in school and had attention problems show his functioning of the brain. Then from experiencing the criminal life and being locked up at a young age set him on his path. From his life, all he could do was get worse.
1)According to the text, “A stable feature, characteristic, property, or condition, such as defective intelligence or impulsive personality, that makes some people delinquency prone (Siegel, Welsh, and Senna Pg. 160). Luis’ behavior patterns from a developmental perspective suggests that his behavior was influenced by what happening around him, his mother was a prostitute, lived in poverty and lived a life of crime. He also had negative personal characteristics that he displayed by getting into trouble in school. He had a learning disorder and later dropped out of school.
2)The latent trait theory suggests; that there are some personal characteristics that we are born with or that we develop them at some point early in life. The text gave a few examples of latent traits; defective intelligence, impulsive personality, genetic and brain abnormalities, and environmental influences (Siegel, Welsh, and Senna Pg. 160). Luis’ latent traits were environmental influences and developmental abnormalities.
Problem behavior syndrome suggest that bad behavior is from multiple problems and not just one factor.Understanding problem behavior syndrome is important when entering the juvenile delinquency system because it is impossible to help children if you dont understand whats going on with them and undrestand what is the driving force behind their actions. I would assume that the student with the perfect score on his sat`s had a good family structure, lives in a middle or upper class neighborhood and was a well rounded student in school. I would assume that the carrer criminal grew upin a poverished neighborhood with a single parent and antisocial in school.
1. From a developmental view luis suffered from behavior problems because of his dysfunctional home life by his mother was a prostitute. 2. The latent trait theory suggest that luis was already proned to bad behavior because of is mother.
1. From a development perspective,I believe with Luis's master trait and his household structure help develop his latent trait. Luis had attention problems at an early age and a poor home environment. Latent trait says that "people do not change, criminal opportunities change". As Luis got older, a new opportunity presented itself in the Latin Kings so Luis joined.
2. The fact that Luis's immigrated to Chicago mixed in his mother not being around and his inability to progress in school and involvment with crime at an early age indicates a reason why he would join the Latin Kings. Luis knew about crime at a early age and a new opportunity presented itself which also supplied the attention and comfort that was missing in his childhood.
1. From the developmental point of view Luis suffered from not knowing what positive influences even entail. Growing up in a household where the primary parent was a prostitute it only subjected him to negative outlooks and posibilities in his life. He actually became his surroundings in a sense because that was all he knew. Being that his mother was a prostitute she also I am sure abused drugs and children for a fact growing up in households where drug abuse by caregivers is evident have extensive emotional issues and a wide range of emotional issues. Luis also had poor positive supervision therfore he resulted to criminal behavior and joining a gang the Latin kings. Young people most often join gangs as a sense of belonging to some sort of group or family as some may think. 2. As far as the latent theorist believes that once you commit a crime you will always be a criminal because one opportunity to display criminal activity is what encourages juveniles to engage in deliquent behavior. along with the fact of not knowing the full consequences that come with the behavior. Being that Luis was exposed to the negative influences early on it definitely took a part in his criminality. In some instances not only were Luis and other children exposed in early childhood but may have also benn exposed to negative influences prenatally potentially drugs or lack of care to body.
1. From a developmental perspective Luis' behavior is a product of the way his life was as he was growing up. His mother was a prostitute and he grew up in a place that was very impoversihed and had many opportunities for a juvenile to commit delinquent acts. This led him to a life of crime which was the only life he knew because that is what he grew up around.
2. A latent trait theorist would say that there was no way for Luis ito change his behavior and that he was bound for a life of delinquency and crime. Luis grew up in an area where the opportunity to commit crime was just as great as the inclination and that was hsi stable latent trait to grow into a full blown crimial.
1. From a developmental perspective, Luis's behavior patterns were the circumstances of events and life choices that he made growing up. He didn't have his family around so he joined a gang, and he had a less than adequate education. 2. Latent trait theorists may explain Luis' escalating delinquent activities as an underlying condition. Luis dropped out of school at a young age, and therefore had a low IQ, he was predisposed to delinquent activity through his mother the prostitute, and it seemed that he was presented with opportunities to commit crimes in different stages of his youth.
1.luis actions can justfied, because firstly, he was exposed to deficiency at a very tender age. secondly, he was raised by a prostitute, in which all these factors played a major role in him choosing a crime life, which also continued into his adulthood. also, he had attention trouble which can also be a factor. from a developmental perspective, it will be explained that he had a long history of antisocial activities, which also followed him into adulthood.
2.a latent trait theorists will explain that, he may have a low IQ, impulsive personality or genetic abnormalities, in which all these characteristics contributed to him being a career criminal
"Developmental theory of delinquency is a view that looks at the onset, continuity, and termination of a delinquent career." Luis was a career criminal. Sent to jail at an early age and continued delinquency through adulthood. The text states "The developmental view is that a delinquent career must be understood as a passage along which people travel, that it has a beginning and an end, and that events and life circumstances influence the journey. His life was based on the latent trait theory, “the fact that behavior is linked less to personal change than to changes in the surrounding worlds.” Wright’s findings indicate that social relationships that form later in life appear to influence delinquent behavior “above and beyond” individuals’ preexisting characteristics. This finding may reflect the fact that there are two classes of criminals: a less serious group who are influenced by life events, and a more chronic group whose latent traits insulate them from any positive pro-social relationships.”
“The factors that affect a delinquent career may include structural factors, such as income and status; Luis grew up in poverty and his mother prostituted herself. Socialization factors, such as family and peer relations; he joined a gang called the Latin Kings and later started a New York prison chapter of the Latin Kings. "Biological factors, such as size and strength; psychological factors, including intelligence and personality; He was uneducated and was described as having attention problems. Once immigrated and sent to the United States he fell into what he knew. This would show that Luis could not fall under the Life-course theories which emphasize the influence of changing interpersonal and structural factors (that is, people change along with the world they live in). Luis world had a chance to change when he was immigrated to the United States, Gottfredson and Hirschi explain why some people who lack self-control can escape criminality, and why some can’t. People who are at risk because they have impulsive personalities. In contrast, if the opportunity is strong enough, eve people with relatively strong self-control may be tempted to violate the law; the incentives to commit delinquency may overwhelm self-control. Integrating delinquent propensity and delinquent opportunity can explain why some children enter into chronic offending while others living in similar environments are able to resist delinquent activity.
1. The developmental theory would explain Luis's behavior as typical of his situation. From the beginning Luis was at a disadvantage, he was brought up in an impoverished neighborhood in Havana. One can only imagine the dysfunction of his family growing up under these conditions, and having your mother be a prostitute it is obvious to say that he lacked positive influences in his young life. Luis first started offending at the age of nine, which a developmental theorist would say is a direct correlation with his dysfunctional home life. He was said to have ADD and dropped out of school at a young age, this furthering his path to criminal behavior. With no school as a young man he must have had a lot of free time. Once he immigrated to the U.S. his crimes escalated to murder and gang activity. Through out Luis journey that is life he had many poor influences on his impressionable young mind. These bad influences coupled with his antisocial behavior gave Luis a sure shot of being a developmental delinquent. 2. As the text describes trait theory can be caused by intelligence and impulsive personality. These are both traits that Luis has. He had numerous problems in school and couldn’t pay attention, this shows his impulsiveness. He started his criminal behavior as early as nine years old. As he got older his criminal opportunities increased as well as the severity of his crimes which would amount to murder. A latent trait theorist would say that Luis could have been easily identified as a latent trait delinquency at a very young age.
From a developmental perspective, Luis’ behavioral patterns are attributed to his upbringing, early onset of crime and lack of social capital. First, Luis grew up in poverty. Children who live in disadvantaged communities are more prone to delinquent activities and behaviors than those raised in good/affluent areas. In impoverished areas, there are more opportunities for crime, such as children left unsupervised and homes with valuable merchandise left unguarded. Second, Luis’ mother was a prostitute and there is no mention of his father, which leads one to assume that he was raised in a single-parent household. Strong family bonds play a significant role in the healthy development of children. Since his mother’s occupation is a form of delinquency, this puts Luis at greater risk for involvement in delinquency as well. In addition, children growing up in a single-parent environment are more likely to engage in misconduct and criminal activities than their counterparts who have both parents available. Given that Luis lacked a strong family bond to set the foundation for his behavior patterns, it is evident why he had trouble in school. Children with positive family forces are supported academically and socially at home. In these households, educational values and the importance of social networks are reinforced. Third, Luis was arrested at age nine for robbery. His weak family structure led to an early onset of crime. In addition, youths who engage in delinquency at an early age are at a greater risk of continued criminal behavior throughout adulthood. Fourth, Luis joined a gang. His membership in the Latin Kings confirms the concept that youths gravitate towards different social networks at certain points in their lives. Young children generally form attachments to their parents, adolescents form bonds with their peers and adults begin to create their own families. Last, Luis killed his girlfriend. His deep involvement in gang activities increased his violent-crime history from robbery to murder. This is due to his association with other criminal-minded individuals. In conclusion, Luis will more likely be a persistent offender due to his lack of social capital. Luis does not have a legal job, positive social network or a solid family structure (spouse, children), which are key elements of social capital.
According to a latent trait theorist, Luis’ delinquent activities would be explained as a problem stemming from birth or a short while after. Latent theorists believe that there is a master trait relating to intelligence level, personality dysfunctions and the overall genetic makeup. Latent theorists would say that Luis’ attention problems in school were an indication of a low IQ, which affected his ability to make rational decisions. They also believe that people who exhibit delinquent behavior have issues with self-control. Equally important, they believe that people remain the same but the criminal opportunities around them change. For Instance, in Luis’ criminal career he escalated from robbery to murder because he was introduced to greater opportunities for crime when he joined a gang.
1. From a development perspective,I believe with Luis's master trait and his household structure help develop his latent trait. Luis had attention problems at an early age and a poor home environment. Latent trait says that people do not change, criminal opportunities change. Luis knew about crime at a early age and a new opportunity presented itself which also supplied the attention and comfort that was missing in his childhood.
1)Luis Francisco started his criminal career at the young age of 9. His childhood had been such a displacement for him. His mother was a prostitute and they lived in poverty. He had dropped out of school and immigrated to the U.S. At a young age of 9 he began his criminal acts and never stop even as an adult. This all has to do with who and where he grew up, it has to do with his mother not being around and all the wrong people be there for Luis. 2)A latent trait theorist would look at Luis life and see the way he was living. He’s grew up in a poor family structure, with his mother as a prostitute, Luis was lacking his mother figure around. Which would give Luis plenty of time to find another person to look up too. An he did, he joined a gang where he felt he fits in. Luis is missing more then one of the latent trait theorist. This could explain his delinquent acts.
