In the text there are various theoretical explanations as to why young people join gangs. Explain which theory makes the most sense and why. Be specific explaining what parts of the theory appeal to you (at least two paragraphs).

1. The Social Disorganization/ Sociocultural View Theory make sthe most sense to me for why young people join gangs because they are from poor neighborhoods who come from dysfunctional and destitute families. Their families members usually have criminal backgrounds and lack education. This theory says that gangs are formed because youths want to have street credit and a good reputation among their peers.
Youths are said to join gangs because they need to feel like they belong to something. Gangs give family-like friendships. Youths who join gangs are usually outcast of their neighborhoods and in their own families.
2. The theory that makes the least sense to me is the Anthropolical View Theory. All of the theory's had good points and a lot of great views I would combined most of them into one big theory that would explain why youths join gangs. The Anthropoligical View doesn't make sense to me because they have initiation ceremonies. I think that's crazy that someone has to hurt themselves just to prove that they are loyal enough to be apart of that group. I had a neighbor who was trying to get involved with the local neighborhood gang . Everyday for two weeks he would come home covered in blood with black eyes. He is now apart of that group and is involved with the new comers initiations. Is it really worth all the pain and embrassment to belong to a group that wants to hurt you before they let you in?
The Social Disorganization/Sociocultural View makes sense to me. According to the text "those who join gangs are the most marginal youths in their neighborhoods and are outcast in their own families". So they join the gang to feel like they are apart of something, to have friends and people who are going to look out for them. Since they are outcast in their own family they just want to feel like they are somebody at least to the people in the neighborhood. The sociocultural view "assumes that gangs are a natural and normal response to the privations of lower-class life and gangs are a status generator for boys". So they find it hard to gain status in a legal way so they figure if they join a gang then it will help build their status for them.
I think that each view gives alot of good points why someone would want to join a gang. So it was hard for me to pick one that made the least sense to me.
youth join gang for so many reason and ths may include comng from a poor family where chldren necesety could not be met as a result the kids look for an alternative way by joning the gang selling drugs to make ends meet and feel among their peers. Abused kikds may also jon gang because they feel they have lost everything so the only opton left for them is to get involve in some criminaly activies.also the kind of neighburhood. peer group,lack of parental supervisonis also why kids join gang.
I agree with the psycological view
only becoause I do believe that some youths are easily manipulated.
they are caught between a world they are trying to escape and a world they don't really understnd.
so they are talked into something some may regret later.
I can't really choose a theroy that makes the least sense because they made good sense. there is no one reason why these young people join gangs.
I would have to say social disorganization/sociocultural view.
Children growing up in a disorganized family are going to act out in different ways then a child growing up in an organized family would. When a child is put in a situations where he or she feels as if they don’t belong, they will find a place where he or she dose belong. They end up joining a gang because they feel the comfort of belonging. They also join gangs sometimes to feel love that they are not getting at home.
The one that makes the least sense to me would be the anomie view. I feel as if there was always racial groups hanging out. But we only notices when another when other groups started complaining about it.
The theory that makes the most sense why youth join gamgs is the Rational Choice theory. The reason why I conclude that is because youths feel that joining a gang will help them expand their criminal life style. It will also bring them a source of money faster than having a job. Youths also join a gang for the source of security and to be in a group that will always be there for them. The last reason why youths join gangs is because gangs offer economic, social and party events.
The reason why I chose rational choice view is because that was the best reason why youth would want to join a gang. The other theories such as Anthropological View, Social Disorganization/Sociocultural, and Psychological really didn't give the best reason why youths want to join a gang.
The Social Disorganization View makes the most since to me. In my opinion this theory makes a good point, most of the children in gangs are from lower class neighborhoods, and /or dysfunctional families. They want to become successful, but are unwilling to work hard to do so.
What also stood out to me was that gang members are “out cast in their families” they feel like they do not fit in at home so they join gangs to find that since of family that they do not have at home.
The rational choice theory makes the most sense to me as to why youths join gangs. Everyone is given a free will to do as they please, what they choose to do with it is up to them. Some might join gangs for status, others for a sense of security and protection. Whatever the reason, when it comes down to it they have to make a choice for themselves to do good or bad.
There wasnt a specific theory that didnt make sense to me because like delinquency, there are a numerous amount of factors that play a part in explaining behaviors. No one thing has been proven as the sole explaination. Although i feel that there is a combination of things that make people do the things that they do, when it comes down to it, the individual is responsible for their own actions. I do not believe in trying to justify delinquent behavior.

Areas such as the inner city where teens face harsh living conditons, lack of education, money, and no guidance.Malcolm Klien states that, "typical gang members came from dysfunctional and destitute families". They lacked a proper role model, education efficacy, and were forced to see others in better conditions.Gangs are a natural alternative to a deprived life.In the eyes of teen deliquents gangs provide the structure and organization they lack otherwise.
2. I disagree with the Anthropological view. I believe the rituals such as getting jumped in are just an acceptable form of initiation. The delinquent teen is so hungry and wanting of acceptance, a family, and wealth that they are willing to go through the trauma and being jumped in or killing someone to be accepted. It doesn't show loyalty as a gang leader might coin as their intentions. What it does is show that the teen is easily manipulated, willing to do whatever, and foolish enough to do what is needed for the gang. What may be a legitimate ritual somewhere else has been twisted to the needs of those who run the gangs. Jumping in just shows even more the violent and out of control nature of gangs
Accoding to the text book there are various resons that people join gangs. In a youth ealy growth peiord friend are a very important factor in a childs life. If a child is not accepted by his or her friends it could cause lot of emotional demage. Acceptance by ones peers is a critical factor in ones life. If a child is not accepted by peers this may cause problems in their socialization. Friendships are strongly relayed on in lower-class society because some lack the family ethic and the education that the middle class has. Also youth who dont fit in well with the opposite sex are more likely to ingage in delinquent act or even conform into a gange where they feel acceptance by others. Other resons for joing gangs is that it could be a family tradition to become a gang member. Also joing a gang could be a cry for love and attention from peers whether it good or bad.
Rational Choice makes the most sense to me because it talks about the idea of making money. Rational choice explains how kids who don't have a lot of legitimate options to make money turn to gangs. This is also a reason why gangs are most popular in low income neighborhoods. Kids who are already delinquent might join a gang in order increase their criminal opportunities. Rational choice also states that joining a gang also provides social opportunities. Gangs give youth a way to interact with people who are like them that might be difficult to find in mainstream.
The concept that makes the least sense is the Anthropological View. It states that gang initiations are a way that youth can make the transition to adulthood. I don't see becoming an adult as that much of a issue for troubled youth. Anthropological View explains how the gang initiations and the initiations of ancient tribes serve the same purpose of sending a kid into adulthood but i don't believe there isn't enough information to make this correlation; because it doesn't explain what type of tribes and were these tribes committing violent acts.
I agree with the Anomie view as to why youth join gangs. It states in this theory that joining a gang stems from what the child is not receiving as a child to make him grow or develop correctly in their lives. Some of the things youth might have endure throughout childhood may make him turn to a gang to feel accepted for who he think his needs or wants to be for the time being. For example such misfortunes as abuse of any sort in the home being done on or in front of the child. Being from a poor family also contributes to the child turning to a group of people who may be able to make it accessible ot him without any consequences being put solely on him so he may think. Gangs are like the family that some of our youth probably never had. Like the saying goes negative attention is better than no attention at all.
THe theory that makes the least amount of sense is the rational choice view because not teens join gangs to engage in law-violating bahaviors they join to be a part of the thing that is missing from their lives. Being initated in a gang does not make you want to become a part of it because most of these young have already been hurt physically, mentally, and emotionally so it doesn't make sense that they would join to be hurt just to get in and prove themselves.

According to this theory gangs form because of destructive sociocultural forces in disorganized inner-city areas. Most youths who engage in delinquent ativities come from "broken-homes" or families with criminal history and that causes them to look for something that is comforting to them so they joing gangs. Malcolm Klein's research found that average gang members come from dysfunctional and destitute families, had family members with criminal histories,and lacked adequate education.
I agree with Irving Spergel that the gang gives lower-class youths a means of attaining personal reputations and peer group status. I feel as though youths who have been cast out from engaging with "normal" peers turn to gangs to obtain a reputation and some kind of status in society be it good or bad. The sociocultural view says that gangs are a natural and normal response to the privations of lower-class life and that gangs are a staus-generating medium for boys whose aspirations cannot be realized by legitimate means.
2. The Anthropological view of why youths join gangs makes the least sense to me. According to this view gangs appeal to kids' tribal instincts. This theory compared the rituals of joining gangs in the 1950s to the gang rites of today which are totally different. Back then, youths went through a rite of passage to go from childhood to adulthood not for illegal activity but more for survival. This is why this theory makes te least sense to me.
The Rational Choice theory makes the most sense to me because most people join gangs because of the money. they can get what they want faster than getting a job. another is that a gang can expand thier criminal life and they have partners that can help them whith thier activities.then they have social and party events.
the theory that makes the least sense to me is the Anthropolical view. i dont think anyone will have to go through initiation to be accepted. maybe back in the 80s or 70s but not in this time of day. i dont think that being beatup or killing someone to prove that your loyal happens anymore. i also dont think that joining a gang makes someone give up his life as a child.
Based on the views provided by the text explaining why youths join gangs, I believe that the rational choice view makes the most sense and the psychological view makes the least sense. The rational choice view states that youths become involved in gangs for certain benefits, such as protection, fun and survival. The psychological view says that psychologically disturbed children not only join gangs but become leaders due to their lack of social feelings.
First, the rational views posits that teens turn to gangs for protection. Some teens may lack a close-knit family due to drug-addicted parents, absent parents or unstable home lives. Their need for acceptance, loyalty and love drives them into the arms of gangs members who they believe can give them the family they've longed for. Also, teens may take an interest in gangs because they may be new to a neighborhood that has a high population of a specific culture, race, or ethinic group which differs from their's. They seek out gangs as a means to protection so they can fit in rather than be the target "outcast." Equally important, kids join gangs as a means of protection from other gangs or groups.
Secondly, the view says that some teens join gangs to have fun. They like the fact that they can engage in adreneline-rushing activities with teens who have the same interests. In cases of children who come from middle-class families, the often enjoy getting into trouble because it is an outlet for them. Some of them have been so sheltered and has had everything given to them; therefore, they turn to gang activity as a means of rebellion.
Lastly, this view suggests that teens are drawn to gangs because it gives them the opportunities to develop criminal careers and provides sources for income that may not have been available to them through legitimate means. Most often, teens who gent involved with gangs have previously engaged in law-violating acts. These youths become intrigued by the increased ability to obtain material goods either through illegal activities like stealing or from the profits of drug trafficking. In some instances, teens may be the product of impoverished communities or unemployed/underpaid parents which means money to buy the things they want or need is scarce or nonexistent; therefore, they turn to gangs as a survival mechanism.
In my opinion, the psychological view makes the least sense because it labels gang members as misfits with mental problems. It states that they are "psychologically diseased" and are "sociopathic." I do not believe this to be true. This view gives me the impression that if a child has psychological problems then he/she will become a gang member or leader. The psychological view says that gangs target these disturbed teens specifically. I find this hard to believe because there are plenty of psychologically disturbed teens who have adjusted to society without the need for gang involvement; therefore, it must be more to why teens join gangs, other than the correlation to psychological issues.
The theory that makes the most sense to me is Social Disorganzation/Socialcultural view. I believe that gangs give lower- class youth a means of attaining personal reputations and peer group status. I have seen members from dysfunctional families, had family members with criminal history, and a lack of strong role models become active participants in gangs.The youth reputation is very important to them and their role models are gang members. If you are surrounded by criminal activities and gangs and do not have other positive social influences your are high risk of getting involved in antisocial behaviors.
These theory says that youth in disorganized communities and doesn't have any family support join gangs to develop family like relationships.I also agree that gangs are a status medium for boys who can not reach their aspiration by legitmate means. The fact that they want to be financially stable but can not achieve this by conventional means is a factor in why a person join a gang. If they do not have the education or skill set then it becomes problematic.I also agree that gangs are a coalition of trouble youth who are socialized mainly by the streets.
The theory that makes the least sense to me is the Anthropological view. Although, there are gangs who initiate and functions may be similaiar to some tribal rites, I do not believe that the youth are yearning to become a gang member. If the are it's because their role model is a gang member. I think that it's more of the social disorganiztion and social cultural influences that lead youngster to join gangs.

2. i think that all the theories makes sense to me because, it explains and also give different meaning to why people involve in gang activities.
The rational Choice view stems around free will. This causes a person to consider the beneifts and the consequences of their actions. At first I looked at it as being Psychological but after reading you don't necessary have to have Psychological problems in order to join or be excepted into a gang. I found that it is a choice on whether you choose to join a gang. The benefits could be protection, economics, acceptance, and popularity, peer pressure can play a big part but ultimintally if is up to the individual.
The theory that didn't seem likely was Anthropolical View Theory. Even though it is possible for things to be handed down from generation to generation biological this is a learned behavior not genetic one.
